This was so new to us. As Emily closed up 9th grade it was time for Semi-formal. It turns out this is an all day plan. We had nails and hair and makeup. I swear it was more involved than my wedding prep. I think my favorite memory from the preparation of this event was the dress shopping. I remember as a kid going dress shopping with my own mum. She worked in HR for a department store so I got to live out my Julia Roberts dreams of shopping in Pretty woman where people would bring clothes upon clothes to me in the dressing room.
We were super fortunate that the first store we went into had THE dress. The one that made Emily feel like a million dollars. When she finished school on the day of the dance I took her to get a full set of acrylics. Something she could not do before was have long nails due to gymnastics so again, she felt so special. She was absolutely starving so I went and got her a sandwich and basically hand fed it to her while her nails were being done.
For the next stage of the day, it was Photography. We had a tough time planning where to do photos as the weather was due to be on and off rain. Downtown Syracuse was mainly closed off for a festival so that was a no go. We did however have a park just outside of town that is beautiful if you can get good weather. This park is also special to me as I took our 7th year wedding anniversary photos there with the kids. So we decided to risk it and go head up there. As we arrived, the gloomy skies cleared and we were greeted with the most spectacular lighting. Emily had arranged for her best friend in the world to be her plus 1 and so we set about taking photos. When I tell you it was a whirlwind of emotions. I am so proud of the young lady she is becoming.
